Navien Condensing Tankless 98%

Navian tankless water heaters are rated at up to 98% efficiency; this is achieved through a process called condensing. This is the highest rated condensing tankless available on the market today. As a result if the Navian’s high efficiency an average house can expect to save about 40$ additional over a conventional non condensing tankless Water heater. Compare it to a conventional tank type water heater and you could potentially save more than 160$. Efficiency is the key for the future, we need to get more out of what we now have less of. 98% of the energy used in this Navian unit actually works to heat water and is not just blown out the exhaust vent.  The chart should help to determine what size of Navien tankless water heater you might need to meet your home/familys domestic hot water needs.

Navian has now moved to dual stainless steel heat exchanges in its tankless water heaters, they claim that this material offers 20 times more corrosion resistance and increased condensation damage. The Navien Tankless water heaters are also employing a new air pressure sensor that senses incoming and oxygen and can compensate for long vent runs to maximize efficiency in the combustion chamber.

Navian Venting

Navian Tankless water heaters have a significant advantage in their venting requirements. For the Navian system to meet code it only need to be vented with conventional PVC piping. This results in a significant cost savings for the consumer or Navian tankless owner. The required pipe can be purchased at your local Home Depot or hardware store. In addition if you purchase the system from a certified installer or dealer they are able to pass the savings on to you, reducing the overall cost.

The reason that conventional piping can be used is due to the Navian system recycling so much of the heat that the exhaust gasses being released are basically just warm air. This reduces the risk of fire and allows for more versitile venting options.

If your considering a tankless water heater, take another look at the Navian systems they are full of unique innovations other companies are trying to match.

Navian Condensing Tankless

Navian Condensing Tankless Water Heater
To help explain “condensing technology” for a tankless water heater imagine the condensation that forms on the outside surface of a glass of ice water. This condensation is purposely created inside Navien’s condensing heat exchanger (thats the secondary heat exchanger) from the incoming cold water. This cold water works to cool the hot gases inside the unit increasing its efficiency. Navien’s stainless-steel condensing heat exchanger then traps this condensation and uses it, making the whole process incredibly efficient and economical. This condensation (or vapors and gases) would normally escape through the vents in a conventional tankless water heater. But with Navien’s technology the water heater reuses the condensation, providing one of the most efficient and economical tankless Water Heater a home owner can buy.

Thats how all the Navian condensing Tankless systems work.

Navien Problems

$
0
0

Navian was the first to come out with a condensing tankless water heater and thus they are bound to have some additional issues. This post is aimed at addressing and solving some of these problems
Issues

  1. Navien flow sensor issues
  2. Navien Control board failures
  3. Navien Heat exchanger cracks

The flow sensor

Early Navian models had flow sensors that would easily corrode and shut the unit down as the buildup would impair operation. There is a temporary fix where you take the two clamps off the sensor, pull it out and blow on it. The fix that Navien has made is to change the sensor over to stainless steel, you can replace the part to prevent this unexpected shut down. Also an additional fix is to install a 5 micron filter in the water inlet right before the Navian.

Navian Control Boards or Motherboards

These do fail relatively frequently and symptoms would be that the unit turns on, then off, then on, and then off repeatedly or possibly, fails with error code 03 (ignition failure). There are a few other issues that the board can cause but the only real solution is to power cycle the unit (un-plug and plug back in) or replace the Navien control board.

Cracking Heat Exchanger

This isn’t near as frequent as the problems listed above but it is an issue none the less. A heat exchanger should be replaced immediately; it’s a breach containment allowing exhaust gases to enter your home. The heat exchanger is under Navian warranty.

Navien Tankless Recall In Ontario – Poisoning Risk – Models and Model Number

$

Navien tankless has issued a recall on thousands of tankless systems that have pose a risk of leaking carbon monoxide and poisoning homeowners.

Navien is located in South Korea and has been manufacturing it’s tankless water heater for several years now. There are a suspected 13,000 units with the defect and recalled. An unstable connection can cause the vent collar to separate or disconnect allowing exhaust and carbon monoxide to leak into the home.

Tankless water heaters are a green appliance that is able to heat water instantly saving consumers money and energy. A tankless eliminates the need to have a standing storage hot water tank that needs to be heated continuously.

The affected Navien tankless systems that are being recalled were sold to distributors from February 2008 to March 2009. They have been described as:

Navien tankless hot water heaters are white with “T-Creator” and “NAVIEN” on the front. Recalled model numbers are CR-180(A), CR-210(A), CR-240(A), CC-180(A), CC-210(A) and CC-240(A) manufactured in 2008. A label on the side of the water heater lists the model number along with the manufacturing year in YYYY format.

These units are installed indoors in basements and closets (typically in Canada and the northern US). The units that are installed outside are not affected and not being recalled.

If you discover you have one of these models you can schedule a free repair but should not use the water heater in the mean time. Navien also suggests that a carbon monoxide detector be installed outside the sleeping areas of homes.

For more information you can contact Navien at (800) 244-8202 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.

Navien Tankless Water Heaters Past and Present

The Navien tankless water heater has been around Canada for awhile now and there have definitely been some issues.  It’s important to know that a Navien tankless is condensing meaning that it is upwards of 98% efficient. Most other tankless brands are just releasing their condensing tankless technologies and thus have had ample time to work out kinks.  Navien had some issues in the beginning but have for the most part worked out most of the common problems and have a great, reliable, tankless water heater.

Past Issues

  • Flow sensor – A few different things can go wrong causing the system to shutdown and stop working, problem rectified on the NR series tankless
  • Motherboard – For some reason Navien had many of these completely fail, they did have them replaced but the issue can still creep up on older models.  The NR series for Navien addressed this issue.
  • Installers – Most installers were new to tankless water heaters and all the installation procedures that are involved.  Some fault Navien issues could be directly attributed to the installer/plumber/gas fitter themselves.
  • Customers/Sales People – Some issues were simply unrealistic promises by sales people regarding the performance of a Navien tankless water heater.  In addition some issues could be directly traced back to a home owner who had unrealistic expectations from their new tankless system.

New Generation Navien Tankless

Navien has a new generation line-up called the NR series, (NR180 NR210 NR240) these 3 systems have benefited from past generations and include all the upgrades and re-engineering to make this condensing tankless one of the more reliable residential tankless models available.

As a home owner interested in a tankless you need to ensure that you installer has experience with these systems, ask them how many they have installed and for how long.  You need to understand that our Canadian winters drop the ground water temperature significantly, this reduces the amount of hot water a Navien tankless can produce (see below for numbers).  It doesn’t matter what tankless brand you choose they are all affected by cold ground water.  Yes, past Naviens have had issues but the new generations are stand-up quality and very effective at conserving energy and producing hot water.

See if a Navien is right for you and your home today.

Navien Tankless Installer

We have been a Navien tankless installer for several years now.  We have made mistakes, we have installed bad products, but we have grown over the years.  Around 2009 we completely stopped selling and installing tankless systems made by Navien.  People constantly asked and requested the systems from us due to the 98% efficiency claim.  We had to either turn down the potential client or hopefully convince them to go with a different brand.  Here is what transpired.

Get a Quote for a Navien

That second generation of Navien tankless water heaters had some serious flaws. From the electronics on the motherboard to a simple flow sensor, one thing or another inevitable broke down.  Even to this day we still are constantly doing Navien service calls or Navien tankless repairs.  At one point we wrote a post stressing that home owners not install a Navien tankless, which garnered the interest of Navien America.  We were hit with a defamation claim and ordered to retract our statements… We fought back.

Today, in a way, we would like to retract our past statements.  We are, once again a Navien tankless installer.  Navien has had a third generation tankless available to Toronto and GTA home owners and residents since around 2011.  We have only great things to say about this updated unit. Clearly Navien has taken this issues present in their past tankless and not only fixed them, but also improved the system.

The Navien has been upgraded to a definite buy!

We are again renting, leasing, selling and installing the navien tankless water heater throughout the GTA.  That includes areas in and around Oakville, Hamilton, Burlington, Milton, Brampton, North York and Toronto.

Most Popular Tankless Water Heaters

$

0

First, I want to preface this article by bringing attention to the fact we are located in the Greater Toronto Area.  We are very well acquainted with a tankless behaviour in our water type, incoming temperature, and installation codes.  Some of our traffic comes from other Provinces within Canada and the systems we select here may not be the best choice for other locations.  Although… The information we present will still likely prove to be useful.

Today were going to look at some of the most popular tankless water heaters sold and installed here in Ontario.  There are two main categories; condensing tankless and non-condensing tankless

Condensing Tankless

A condensing system utilizes two heat exchangers.  The larger primarily exchanger is the main component used to heat your water up.  The smaller heat exchanger utilizes the otherwise waste heat within the exhaust to preheat the incoming water, further increasing efficiency. A condensing tankless is roughly between 95% and 98% efficient.

Non-Condensing Tankless

These systems are a little less complicated in that they only have one heat exchanger.  It sole task is to heat your water up to the desired temperature fast.  A non-condensing thankless averages around 82% -84% efficient with just the single heat exchanger.

To put this in perspective, your conventional 40 or 50 gallon tank type water heater is lucky to start out with a 50% efficiency rating.

Top Condensing Tankless Water Heaters

  1. Rheem TanklessCRTGH 95DV
  2. Rinnai TanklessRU98i
  3. Navien TanklessNR240

Rheem made the #1 spot with the built in condensate buffer tank and the industry’s lowest flow start up rate of .26 gallons/minute.

Rinnai is in second with the best tankless reliability in the industry.

Navien is in third with the oldest and most installed condensing tankless water heater on the market; they have had some troubles in the past but those have all been rectified.

Top Tankless (Non-Condensing)

  1.  Rinnai Tankless - R75i
  2.  Navien Tankless- NR210
  3.  Rheem TanklessRTG 84DV

Top spot has to go to Rinnai with the ultra reliable R75i. That system has been installed in thousands of homes throughout Toronto or the GTA and rarely does it ever receive a service call.

Second is a bit out of place but Navien only makes condensing tankless systems and this one is priced competitively, uses the same heat output, but makes about 1 GPM more than the competing systems.

Third is the Rheem Tankless that comes in third with their innovative electronics and the lowest start up flow rate in the industry.

Conclusion

There are a few other brands of tankless systems out there and they are competitive in this we are discussion.  Unfortunately they just don’t attain the same build quality and thus reliability you need to expect from a system designed to last 20 or more years.  If you’re looking to get a tankless water heater for your home make sure to get a quote from the three manufactures we suggested.  Make sure the system fits your needs and have a professional install it.

Navien Combi-Boiler Rebate For Canadians

Canadians Combi-Boiler Rebate

Starting from September 1st to December 31st 2016 Navien is offering a $200 rebate on all their whole home combi boilers.

What is a Combi Boiler?

It’s a tankless and furnace all built into one tiny wall mountable unit. Realistically it is a brilliantly little system that works incredibly well. After installing a few in customers’ homes I actually installed one in my house as well in the fall of 2014, I haven’t looked back since.

Typical homes use hot water surprisingly infrequently so keeping hot water in a 40 or 50 gallon tank hot at all times is very inefficient. In addition to that your conventional tank is terrible at moving heat from the burner into the water which results in most of your money going out the exhaust vent. A tankless heats water immediately upon demand and does so with a substantial increase in efficiency. In fact a tankless is so efficient at exchanging heat into water that the exhaust gasses are simply warm to the touch. A combi boiler is a perfect step forward from your conventional tankless. As I said earlier, hot water is used relatively infrequently in most homes, so Navien intelligently reworked a tankless to heat your home as well as provide hot water.NCB Sizes

Hot water demand always takes precedence over home heating. Thus if the furnace is running and you turn the tap on to wash your hands you get hot water immediately, but as soon as you turn that tap off the furnace aspect kicks back on.

Navien Rebate

Navien is having a bit of trouble getting people to understand how the system works, so in an effort to increase sales they are offering a $200 rebate on all the NCB or Combi boilers they sell in Canada.

Here is the official Navien Rebate site

This problem typically starts with an ERROR 001, ERROR 038, or ERROR 039, but your Navien could show a number of other errors caused by the faulty flow sensor. We will discuss further below.

First thing, if you need hot water immediately, try unplugging the system wait 30 seconds, plug it back in.  This resets your tankless and may give you hot water again for a quick shower or temporary use.  Don’t forget though, this type of error typically will reappear again shortly.

Disclaimer

We recommend you call a certified technician to replace your flow sensor, you are liable for any damage you cause to yourself, your tankless, and it could void your Navien warranty. That being said we understand that homeowners are squeezed in every which way for every penny they have, this is a fairly easy replacement job and the parts are cheap as well.

How To Replace The Flow Sensor

Navien Flow Sensor Replacement Video

Additional Notes

There are a few things to mention here.

  1. Sometimes the flow sensor just needs to be cleaned up and reinstalled to correct the error. If you have heavy scale and calcium in your water a good cleaning may be all that is necessary.
  2. Occasionally something like an error 012 will display indicating a flame loss, this could be indirectly caused by the flow sensor. If your flow sensor is working intermittently the tankless could read no water flow cut the flame but then get flow from the flow sensor again. This situation could theoretically then throw a flame loss error.
  3. Clean the water inlet filter/s. If these get clogged or gummed up water flow will slow to a trickle and you might get a false negative flow sensor error.

A number of Navien tankless water heaters and Navien combi-boilers have Navien emergency repair parts included right inside the system! If you have a water leak, electrical, or even a igniter issue, take a look for the included parts. This bonus kit can get your system back up and running quickly.

The NCB we have in our house had the Navien Emergency Repair parts taped inside and on the right side of the main unit. I have seen them taped into a few different spots. Such as on the inside of the main cover, as well as left or right side of main unit, be sure to check around.

5 Navien repair parts

What Parts Are Included?

I’m typing this at home and referencing the Navien emergency repair parts that were included in the NCB system here. The parts included will vary according to your system and model.

  1. Igniter Gasket A — Part# 20022584A
  2. Igniter Gasket B — Part# 20023585B
  3. O-Ring P18 — Part# 20006954A
  4. O-Ring — Part# 20003022A
  5. Fuse — Part# 20006666A
Navien emergency repair parts

Part 1 and 2 are the gaskets for the system igniter. This is what starts/lights the flame to generate the hot water in your system. They may need to be replaced if you are getting a Navien Error Code E003. Make sure that the spark electrode and flame rod are installed tightly in their brackets, are not loose or corroded, and in the correct position. If you are replacing these parts make sure to use the new gasket provided or, alternatively, the spares in the Navien emergency repair parts.

Parts 3 and 4 are O-Rings and both are used in multi areas throughout the system. In your Navien manual there is a Component Assembly Diagrams and Parts Lists that will identify which O-Ring can be used and in which locations. If there is a water leak it is likely to be the O-Ring and is an easy fix. The Waterway assembly diagram is where you will want to be looking to cross reference the correct part and location.

Part 5 is simply a fuse. If the front panel isn’t on or lit up the first thing you can check is that the plug is in good working order. If the plug/outlet is working the next thing to check is the fuse. You can find the fuse inside the unit, so the front cover needs to be removed to check it. Make sure to keep your Navien unplugged while servicing ANYTHING inside.

Purchase Parts

You can also try to purchase parts from Amazon.com for your Navien if they are not included in the emergency repair kit. A lot of parts are available to Canadians through the .com site vs the Amazon .ca Canadian site. Check Navien emergency parts here
